For this exercise, I gathered around 10 different but popular illustrations, from which I chose 2 to structurally deconstruct into a thumbnail. I chose these pictures particularly because I understand them better and they’re very basic in nature, in the sense that all that elements that constitute them are easily identifiable and separable from each other. These were the images:
Following the process provided, I proceeded to produce thumbnail versions of each image. Since I already had a digital tablet at my disposal, I decided to draw the thumbnails on photoshop.
As can be seen, what I have done is simply understand the nature and relationship between the elements in each image and try to reduce the compositions to nothing but simple line drawings (and in one, a few labels too) that still gets a certain idea out, hopefully similar to the final output.
I returned to the images a few days later to see whether I could still connect both images from the impressions of their respective line drawings. While it was a little too vague in some parts, from the perspective of an art director, I believe it would be more or less to be a decent first step towards the final output, if I may say so.
This video from Instagram by Korean illustrator Yun Gun Iw served as an interesting specimen for this exercise. Apart from the fact that he is one of my favorite artists on Instagram, his process of constructing a framework for his figures has always been an intriguing question for me, as his final product is always so well structured and balanced, something I’d like to achieve some day, hopefully soon.
