Exercise: Making a moodboard

For this exercise, I chose the word Destruction.

I started off with a mind map, splitting the central term into very simple subtopics, so the entire division of the word was actually very simple, I didn’t try to go beyond my own basic understanding of the term, and even used specific words to signify destruction. Words like “melting” and “injury” were helpful this way, anyone can look at these words and thing of destruction to some degree. I also used watercolours to add colour swatches in areas I would associate those colours with. These included bright tones of red and yellow, from the idea that destruction requires a lot of energy, as simple as it may be, and in some cases, destruction liberates energy as well. In the more emotional dimensions of it, I used brown and green, maybe a dull orange to signify mental degredation and a diminshing sense of motivation. Colours like shades of grey and dull blues were used for the logical aspects, because, while I associate moderate tones of blue with logic normally, I believed making it dull would give it a more earthy, organic and human factor. Of course, the human mind constantly changes shades throughout its journey, but I currently relate to these shades of blue.

I made a moodboard following the mind map. I used very basic but mostly human forms of destruction, things like aggression, seperation, injury, abuse and depression. Other images are a dying star and a decomposing carcass, which are more materialistic and yet symbolically philosophical in nature. The colour swatches are mainly a representation or chromatic estimate what I percieve the state of the human mind to be when it is commiting acts of destruction; duller shades of red, yellow, purple and blue. The bright crimson block in the center of the accumulation is the only bright tone I’ve used, that possibly represents the energetic side of destruction.
