For this brief I chose an artist, H.R. Giger whose illustrations I don’t usually Indulge in, but still connect with, perhaps due to the extremely cold nature of his illustrations that instills a sort of fear in me that I experience with certain thoughts in my mind. Thoughts particularly with respect to human nature and evolution.

Giger’s illustrations were the inspiration for Ridley Scott’s representation of the Xenomorph alien deuteragonist in the science-fiction film franchise, Alien. Taking the original illustration “Necronom IV” by Giger as the subject, I wrote a hypothetical brief:

THE BRIEF

The following brief requires you to produce an illustration of a fictional creature for the purpose of using it across a series of films.

The target audience would ideally be science fiction enthusiasts, horror enthusiasts, fantasy lovers, but a primarily adult audience with a more lucid sense of discretion.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTION

The illustration would be used as a reference for the 3D model of a fictional creature, as mentioned before; a carnivorous, amphibian predator that preys mainly on humans. The appearance of the creature should be ominous, but relatable in a way that the audience wouldn’t expect; something that would ideally move in the dark. The creature should be much larger than the average human being.

COLOURS AND SIZE

Keeping the above in mind, I would rather the colours be restricted to cool colours and greys, preferably something monochromatic.

Illustrations should ideally be life-sized, so sculptors may use them as a reference for scale as well. However, the first few drafts need not be very big, a 100 cm x 150 cm size canvas or parchment would do. The image needs to maintain an obscure tone, perhaps integration of humanoid elements, while simultaneously bearing resemblance to carnivorous ambhibians or even large insects.

MEDIUM

Any 2D media that expresses these features clearly is perfectly alright to use, however, oil on canvas would be preferable due to its ability to stay undisturbed.
